3 Things To Keep In Mind For The Reading Portion Of The SAT
As you get ready to go and take the SAT, here are three things that you need to keep in mind as you take the reading portion of the test.
#1 Remember That There Is Only One Correct Answer
One of the most important things to keep in mind as you get ready to take the test is that there is only one correct answer for each question. Since there is only one right answer, one of the best things that you can do is engage in the process of elimination as you go through any test questions that you find tricky. Get rid of the answers that you know are wrong, and really focus on the wording of question. The wording of the question should help guide you to the correct answer.
This is especially true in both the reading and writing sections of the test. This is one area of the test that can feel subjective, but it is not. The SAT clearly defines only one correct answer, even for this part of the test. When stuck, reread the passage and the question, highlight key phrases in the question and use that to guide you to the right answer.
#2 Pay Attention To The Wording Of The Question
Second, pay really close attention to the wording of the question. When you read, look for words that have either a negative or a positive connotation. This can help you figure out what type of answer the question is looking for. It can also help you eliminate choices that don't fit the tone of the question.
Also, keep an eye out for contrast words, such as still, rather than, or however. These contrast words mean that although they are making a point about something, they are looking for information in your answer to be about the point that they are contrasting.
Paying attention to the language and the hints within the wording of the question will help you answer more questions correctly.
#3 Verify With Evidence
In the reading portion of the test, you should always be able to verify the validity of an answer with evidence from the passage of text that you just read. If you are not sure if your answer is correct, go back to the text and verify the answer. If it helps you, underline the answer within the text. This can help you narrow your focus and ensure the accuracy of your answers.
Finally, go with your gut. Your first inclination is probably the right one. Do not second guess yourself too much.
